Something broken, wrong, or missing? Email me.

luke@gmail.com — that reaches a person, not a queue. It is one person maintaining this in spare time, so a reply may take a few days, but every message is read.

If you are reporting something that looks wrong, it helps enormously to say which page or tab, roughly when you saw it, and what you expected instead. A screenshot is worth a lot.

Common questions

most reports land here

A webcam is black, frozen, or shows an errorUsually not us

None of the cameras belong to this site. They are live streams and still images published by others — news stations, park operators, universities, private hosts — and they go down, get rate limited, or get taken offline without notice. A camera that is black at night is usually just dark. If one stays broken for days, tell me and I will pull it or replace it.

The fog map or the neighborhood map is blankNetwork

Both maps pull their mapping library and map tiles from outside services. On a restricted network — hotel or airport wifi, a corporate filter, a captive portal you have not signed into yet — the page loads but the map cannot. In the app you will get a retry button. On the web, reconnecting and reloading is the fix.

How current are the numbers?Freshness

The conditions summary is rebuilt roughly every 15 minutes from the National Weather Service forecast grid and the GOES-18 satellite archive, and satellite frames arrive about every 5 minutes. So the reading is minutes old, not seconds. The app shows the reading time when it cannot refresh, rather than passing off an old number as current.

Why only the Bay Area?Scope

The whole point is the local split — fogged in and 55° at Ocean Beach while it is sunny and 80° inland. That depends on hand-picked forecast grid cells, specific cameras, and a fixed satellite tile over this coast. It does not generalize to somewhere else by changing a setting.

The app never asked for my locationBy design

It does not need it. The app reports the same Bay Area conditions no matter where you open it, so there is nothing to gain by knowing where you are. It requests no permissions at all — not location, not notifications, not the camera. See the privacy page.

The home screen widget looks out of dateiOS

iOS decides how often widgets may refresh and limits it to conserve battery, so a widget can lag the app by a while. Opening the app refreshes it. If the reading is genuinely old the widget says so, with the time it was taken.

Cameras I added disappearedLocal storage

Cameras you add on the webcams page are stored on your device only, never on a server. Clearing your browser data, using private browsing, switching browsers or devices, or deleting the app will lose them. That is also why they are not shared between the website and the app.

Requests and corrections

Suggestions for a camera worth adding, a neighborhood that reads wrong, or wording that misleads are all genuinely welcome — local knowledge is what makes this accurate. If the forecast for your block does not match what you can see out the window, that is worth telling me about.

About and data sources explains where every number comes from, which is often the fastest way to see why something reads the way it does.
